What Are the Icelandic Highlands?

The Icelandic Highlands, also known as the "Hálendið" in Icelandic, encompass a vast interior area of Iceland, occupying about 40% of the country's total landmass. This region is characterized by its stark, volcanic landscapes, colorful rhyolite mountains, massive glaciers, and sometimes hot springs. It's a place where nature reigns supreme, and human presence is minimal.

Why Explore the Highlands?

Untamed Wilderness: The Icelandic Highlands are one of Europe's last true wilderness areas. Here, you can experience the unspoiled beauty of Iceland away from the crowds, where the only sounds you'll hear are the whispers of the wind and the rush of nearby rivers.

Geological Marvels: The Highlands are a geological wonderland. For example, you can explore the Þórsmörk valley, rife with hiking trails and lush greenery, or visit Landmannalaugar, known for its colorful rhyolite mountains and natural hot springs.

Breathtaking Hiking: Whether you're an experienced hiker or a casual trekker, the Highlands offer a range of hiking options suitable for all levels. The Laugavegur Trail is a popular multi-day hike that takes you through some of the Highlands' most picturesque landscapes.

How to Explore the Highlands

Exploring the Icelandic Highlands is not for the faint of heart, but the rewards are well worth the effort. Here's how to embark on your backroads adventure:

Vehicle Requirements: To navigate the Highlands, you'll need a sturdy 4x4 vehicle, preferably equipped with high-clearance. Many of the roads are rough and unpaved, and river crossings are common.

Safety First: Before embarking on your journey, ensure you're well-prepared. Check the weather forecast, inform someone of your plans, and carry essential supplies, including food, water, and warm clothing.

Road Conditions: Road conditions in the Highlands can change rapidly, especially during the fall and spring.  The higland roads are genuinally all closed during the winter season and can only be accessed spcialised vehicles such as super jeeps.  Always check the latest updates and road closures with the Icelandic Road authorities.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to explore the Icelandic Highlands largely depends on your interests and activities. Summer (June to August) offers the most favorable weather for hiking and camping and most roads will be open.. However, winter (from late September to April) the roads will be closed to general traffic due to snow but can be accessed my specifically modified vehicles that can drive on Snow.  The winter also provides a unique opportunity to witness the Northern Lights dancing across the dark Highland skies.

In Conclusion

The Icelandic Highlands offer a backroads adventure like no other. If you're a nature enthusiast seeking solitude, breathtaking landscapes, and a true sense of wilderness, then exploring this remote region should be at the top of your Iceland itinerary. Remember to plan carefully, respect the environment, and embrace the awe-inspiring beauty that awaits you in the heart of Iceland's Highlands.

So, gear up, hit the backroads, and let the Icelandic Highlands captivate your senses with their untamed splendor.
